TRIPLE DISTILLATION — A Modern Dialogue for Students

Scene:
Διάλειμμα στο προαύλιο. Μαθητές κάθονται σε παρέες, ἄλλοι παίζουν, ἄλλοι χαζεύουν στὰ κινητά.
Recess in the schoolyard. Students sit in groups, some play, others scroll on their phones.
Ἡ Ἄννα πλησιάζει τὸν Μάριο, ποὺ εἶναι γνωστὸς γιὰ τὴν ψύχραιμη σκέψη του.
Anna approaches Marios, who is known for his calm and thoughtful mind.
Ἄννα:
Anna:
Μάριε, ἄκουσα κάτι γιὰ τὴ Σοφία ἀπὸ τὸ Β2. Πρέπει νὰ σοῦ τὸ πῶ. Θὰ πάθεις σοκ.
Marios, I heard something about Sophia from class B2. I have to tell you. You’ll be shocked.
Μάριος:
Marios:
Περίμενε λίγο. Πριν μοῦ τὸ πεις, νὰ κάνουμε ἕνα μικρὸ τεστ. Τὸ λένε τριπλὴ διύλιση. Τὸ ξέρεις;
Wait a moment. Before you tell me, let’s do a small test. It’s called the triple distillation. Do you know it?
Διότι ὅπως τὸ λάδι καθαρίζεται περνώντας ἀπὸ φίλτρα, ἔτσι καὶ ὁ λόγος πρέπει νὰ καθαρίζεται πρὶν φτάσει στ’ αὐτιά μας.
Because just as oil is purified through filters, so must speech be purified before it reaches our ears.
Ἄννα:
Anna:
Ὄχι… ἀλλὰ ἀκούγεται σοβαρό.
No… but it sounds serious.
Μάριος:
Marios:
Πρῶτα, ἂς ἐξετάσουμε τὸ φίλτρο τῆς ἀληθείας.
First, let’s examine the filter of truth.
Τὸ εἶδες; Τὸ ἄκουσες ἀπὸ τὴ Σοφία; Τὸ ἐξέτασες;
Did you see it? Did you hear it from Sophia herself? Did you verify it?
Εἶσαι σίγουρη ὅτι αὐτὸ ποὺ ἄκουσες εἶναι ἀληθινό;
Are you sure that what you heard is true?
Ἄννα:
Anna:
Ἐ… ὄχι. Τὸ εἶδα σὲ ἕνα screenshot ποὺ κυκλοφορεῖ στὸ Instagram. Δὲν ξέρω ἂν εἶναι ἀληθινό.
Um… no. I saw it in a screenshot going around on Instagram. I don’t know if it’s real.
Μάριος:
Marios:
Ἄρα μπορεῖ νὰ εἶναι ψεύτικο, παραποιημένο ἢ παρεξηγημένο.
So it might be fake, edited, or misunderstood.
Πάμε στὸ δεύτερο φίλτρο: Καλοσύνη.
Let’s go to the second filter: Kindness.
Αὐτὸ ποὺ θέλεις νὰ μοῦ πεις… εἶναι κάτι καλὸ γιὰ τὴ Σοφία;
What you want to tell me… is it something good about Sophia?
Ἄννα:
Anna:
Ὄχι. Εἶναι μᾶλλον ἄσχημο.
No. It’s rather unpleasant.
Μάριος:
Marios:
Δηλαδὴ θέλεις νὰ μοῦ πεις κάτι κακό, χωρὶς νὰ ξέρεις ἂν εἶναι ἀλήθεια.
So you want to tell me something bad, without knowing if it’s true.
Τρίτο φίλτρο: Χρησιμότητα.
Third filter: Usefulness.
Ἂν τὸ μάθω, θὰ βοηθήσει σὲ κάτι; Θὰ λύσει κάποιο πρόβλημα; Θὰ κάνει κάποιον καλύτερο;
If I learn it, will it help in any way? Will it solve a problem? Will it make anyone better?
Ἄννα:
Anna:
Ὄχι… μᾶλλον θὰ χειροτερέψει τὰ πράγματα.
No… it will probably make things worse.
Μάριος:
Marios:
Τότε γιατί νὰ τὸ πούμε;
Then why should we say it?
Ἂν δὲν εἶναι ἀληθινό, καλό, οὔτε χρήσιμο, καλύτερα νὰ τὸ ἀφήσουμε ἐκεῖ ποὺ εἶναι: στὸ τίποτα.
If it’s not true, good, or useful, it’s better to leave it where it is: in nothingness.
(Ἡ Ἄννα μένει γιὰ λίγο σιωπηλή.)
(Anna remains silent for a moment.)
Ἄννα:
Anna:
Ξέρεις κάτι; Ἔχεις δίκιο. Ἂν τὸ ἔλεγαν γιὰ μένα, θὰ πονοῦσα.
You know what? You’re right. If they said it about me, it would hurt.
Δὲν θὰ τὸ συνεχίσω.
I won’t spread it.
Μάριος:
Marios:
Αὐτὸ εἶναι τὸ σωστό. Στὸ σχολεῖο, ὅπως καὶ στὴ ζωή, ὁ λόγος μας μπορεῖ νὰ χτίσει ἢ νὰ γκρεμίσει.
That is the right thing. At school, as in life, our words can build or destroy.
Ἀς διαλέγουμε νὰ χτίζουμε.
Let us choose to build.
(Οἱ δυο τους φεύγουν μαζί πρὸς τὴν τάξη. Τὸ κουτσομπολιὸ σταματᾶ πρὶν καν ἀρχίσει.)
(The two walk together toward the classroom. The gossip ends before it even begins.)

Message for Students
Ἡ «Τριπλὴ Διύλιση» δὲν εἶναι παλιὰ ἱστορία.
The “Triple Distillation” is not an old story.
Εἶναι ἐργαλείο γιὰ σήμερα:
It is a tool for today:
για τὰ social, γιὰ τὶς παρέες, γιὰ τὶς φήμες, γιὰ τὰ screenshots, γιὰ ὅ,τι κυκλοφορεῖ χωρὶς σκέψη.
for social media, for friend groups, for rumors, for screenshots, for anything that spreads without thought.
Ἂν κάτι δὲν εἶναι Ἀληθινό, Καλό, Χρήσιμο,
If something is not True, Good, Useful,
τότε δὲν ἀξίζει νὰ τὸ μεταφέρουμε.
then it is not worth passing on.
